Terms & Conditions
These terms cover your use of the Caspian desktop app, this website, your Caspian account, and the sites you publish to sites.caspian.md ("Caspian"). By creating an account or using Caspian you agree to them. Questions: hello@caspian.md.
1. Plans
Caspian is offered on two plans:
- Free (Self-serve). Caspian runs on your machine. The app's AI features are not included; you can use your own AI tools on your Workbench instead.
- Managed (shown as Caspian Pro inside the app). We manage the models and infrastructure for you and add the benefits listed in section 3. Listed at $20 per month on our pricing page.
Every account starts on the Free plan. The Managed plan is not purchased inside the app: there is no checkout and the app never takes a payment. To start Managed, email hello@caspian.md; we agree the arrangement with you directly and then switch the plan on for your account by hand. The Subscription tab in the app shows which plan your account is on.
2. Free plan
- AI builds and changes inside the app are not included. You may point your own AI tools (for example Claude or Codex) at your Workbench folder; any usage is billed to you by those providers, under their terms, and you are responsible for those costs and for following those terms.
- Your Workbench (notes, projects and their files) is stored on your own computer.
- You can publish up to 5 projects to the web. Each published site carries a "Made with Caspian" badge.
- Cloud backups and the Managed-only AI features described below are not included.
3. Managed plan (Caspian Pro)
While your account is on the Managed plan you get:
- Managed models. We manage the AI models for you, so there are no API keys to set up.
- Automatic model choice. Caspian selects the best model for the task at hand.
- Fewer wasted builds. A vague request gets a quick clarifying question before any model is paid for, instead of a build that misses the point.
- Right-sized models. The model tier for each request is picked automatically, so small changes stay fast and cheap.
- Leaner prompts. Redundant pre-processing calls are skipped and instructions a project doesn't need are left out, so less is sent to the model on each build and Copilot message.
- Faster Copilot. Quicker responses as a result of the above.
- Daily cloud backups of your whole Workbench, restorable to any point (see section 4).
- Unlimited publishing to the web, without the badge.
Conditions that apply to Managed:
- Activation. Managed is activated and deactivated by us, on your account, after we have agreed it with you by email. We may decline, suspend or end it for breach of these terms or abuse.
- Billing. Because billing is arranged directly with us and not in the app, the price, billing period and payment method are whatever we confirm to you in writing. You can cancel at any time by emailing us; Managed then ends on your account. Refunds are handled case by case — ask us.
- Best effort. The Managed features depend on our servers and on third-party services. We aim to keep them available and fast but do not guarantee uptime. If any of them is unavailable, the app falls back to its normal behaviour, so your work is never blocked by them.
- Changes. We may improve, change or replace Managed features and the way they work. We will not remove the core benefits above without telling you.
- When Managed ends. Your account returns to the Free plan. You can still list, restore and delete backups you already made, but you cannot create new ones. We may delete the stored backups of an account that remains on the Free plan, after giving reasonable notice to the account's email address.
4. Cloud backups (Managed)
- A backup is a zip of your Workbench folder — your notes and project files — uploaded to a private, access-controlled cloud storage bucket that is not publicly accessible. It is not shared with anyone.
- Only your account can list, download (restore) or delete your backups. We do not open or read backup contents except where required to operate the service, keep it secure or comply with the law.
- Limits: each backup can be up to 200 MB, and each account keeps its 30 most recent backups — older ones are removed automatically. The
.caspian/trashfolder is not included. - A backup contains everything in your Workbench, so anything sensitive you keep there (including in notes) is in it. Do not keep secrets in your Workbench that you would not be comfortable having in a cloud copy.
- Backups are a convenience, not a guarantee. Keep your own local copies of anything important; we are not liable for data loss.
5. AI services and your data
Model providers. Prompts, and the project context that goes with them (such as a project's description, history and code), are sent to the AI model provider used for that request. All AI in the app runs on Managed, through OpenRouter to the model provider we route to (on Free, the app sends nothing to a model provider). That provider processes them under its own terms and privacy policy.
Fast decision service (Managed only). To make Managed cheaper and faster, Caspian asks a small AI decision service quick, structured questions about a request before it spends money on a large model — for example whether a request is specific enough to act on, which model tier it needs, and whether an app needs a backend. To do this, on Managed accounts:
- the text of your Copilot message or new-project description (at most the first 6,000 characters) is sent from the app to Caspian's servers, and from there to TypeSafe (typesafe.ai), our third-party provider of this service;
- only that request text is sent — not your project files, notes or backups;
- TypeSafe returns short typed answers (yes/no probabilities, a choice, a score) which the app uses to route the request; it does not write or return any content for your project;
- we keep limited technical logs (your account ID, which questions were asked and token counts) to monitor cost and abuse;
- TypeSafe handles the text it receives under its own terms and privacy policy.
Free accounts never use this service. If it is unavailable, slow or unsure, Caspian simply continues without it.
6. Fair use and acceptable use
- Managed features are for your own use. Per-account rate limits apply to the fast decision service and to uploads; please don't work around them.
- Don't resell or share your account, use backups as general file hosting, or try to access another user's data, our servers or the services behind them.
- Don't use Caspian to build or publish anything unlawful, deceptive, malicious, infringing or harmful, or to attack or overload any service.
7. Your content and published sites
- You own what you create. You grant us the permission needed to store, back up (on Managed), host and display it as you direct — for example to serve a site you publish.
- A published site is public on the internet unless you protect it with a password. Projects that run their own local backend (Node or Python) can't be published yet. Everything else can, including accounts and spaces, which Caspian's servers host.
- If you turn on "Allow clone" for a site, visitors can copy that project into their own Caspian. Only enable it for work you are happy to share.
- You are responsible for what you publish. We may take a site down that breaches these terms or the law.
- AI output can be wrong, incomplete or similar to other output. Review what Caspian builds before you rely on it.
8. Third-party providers
To run Caspian we rely on these providers, each under its own terms:
- OpenRouter — routes Managed AI requests to the model providers behind it (such as Anthropic, OpenAI and Google), depending on the model used for a request.
- TypeSafe — the fast decision service described in section 5 (Managed only).
- DigitalOcean — hosting for Caspian's servers, published sites and cloud storage for backups.
- Resend — sending account emails such as verification codes and password resets.
- PostHog — usage analytics on this website.
9. Disclaimers and liability
Caspian is provided "as is" and "as available", without warranties of any kind, to the fullest extent the law allows. We are not liable for indirect or consequential loss, lost profits, or lost data, and our total liability to you for any claim is limited to the amount you paid us for Caspian in the 3 months before the claim (or, on the Free plan, nothing beyond what the law requires). Nothing in these terms limits liability that cannot be limited by law.
10. Changes and contact
We may update these terms as Caspian changes. The date at the top shows the latest version; if a change materially affects the Managed plan we will tell Managed customers by email. Continuing to use Caspian after a change means you accept it.
